John was born and raised in the Phoenix area.  He attended Apollo High School in Glendale.  He attended Glendale Community College, Phoenix College and Arizona State University majoring in business administration.  

He has 3 children: Trey 20, Trent 16 and Tori 9.    

John worked at Ahwatukee Mobil from 1984 to 1987.  From there he worked at other auto shops as a technician/manager until his uncle opened Salem Boys Auto in 1988.  John worked as a technician/manager there until he and his family moved to Kingman in 1992.  John worked at 66 Auto Sales as a technician. 

He achieved the coveted ASE Master Automobile Service Technician certificate in 1986.  He opened Salem & Sons Auto in Kingman in 1994 where he continues to operate in the same location.   

John has been involved with the Elks since 1995 and participated with the Kingman Jaycees in the ‘90’s.  John is now a Rotarian with the Route 66 Rotary Club. 

John enjoys flying his airplane, playing softball, golf, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.  

Mayor Salem is dedicated to economic development and bringing additional business and good paying, skilled jobs to the Kingman area.

He is actively involved with the League of Arizona Cities and Towns where he has a seat on the Board of Directors.  Mayor Salem advocates for securing state shared revenues for Kingman and for legislation that supports local control.  Mayor Salem participates regularly with issues relating to the Tri-City Council.  He served last year as the Chairman of the Tri-City Council. 

Mayor Salem serves on the Rural Transportation Advisory Council Board of Directors as a liaison for local transportation advocacy.  The mayor also works diligently with the Arizona Department of Transportation Board to help secure local projects.   

Mayor Salem believes that good leadership leads to good government.  He practices an open-door policy with the community at large and is always willing to attend your event. 

One of his most practiced habits is working with the people of the community to make Kingman a better place.  “I am very proud of this City.  I love the people of our community and will strive to work with them to make Kingman a great place to call home.  I am committed to serve this community and the people of Kingman.”
